The European Chess Union and So Independent Film Festival jointly presented the movie “Bobby Fischer against the World”

The European Chess Union and So Independent Film Festival jointly presented the movie “Bobby Fischer against the world”, dedicated to life and chess career of one of the greatest chess players for all times Robert James Fischer.

The movie premiere was part of the festival program of So Independent Film Festival, which is taking place from 25th of October to 4th of November, 2012 in Sofia.

“Bobby Fischer against the world” was part of the official opening ceremony of the festival – October 25, 2012 at 19:30 pm in Cinema City, Mall of Sofia.

At the invitation of President of the European Chess Union Silvio Danailov the premiere was attended by the Nobel prize winner in economics Professor Robert Mundell, worldwide known as the “father of the Euro”, the President of FIDE, Mr. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the Mayor of Sofia, Mrs. Yordanka Fandakova, Mr. Alvaro Ballarin, counselor for cultural affairs of the district of Moncloa, Madrid and many others.

The event was held under the high patronage of the Director General of UNESCO, Mrs. Irina Bokova.


The premiere of the film Bobby Fischer against the world is very important promotional part of the ‘Chess in School’ program of the European Chess Union, because the Seventh Art is one of the most influential and natural ways for dialogue with the youngsters. Mr. Danailov and his team they strongly believe that the compelling example of the most brilliant mind in the world chess Bobby Fischer will contribute to the ECU efforts to attract many new children and young people to play that wise and ancient game, and to popularize the program ‘Chess in School’.

“I am extremely happy that such a famous and wonderful festival like So Independent was opened with the movie about Bobby Fischer. The game of chess the same like Bobby Fischer is real phenomenon. Chess is not simply just a sport, chess is very strong combination of culture, education and science. The presence of such dear guest like the Nobel prize winner and “father of the euro” prof. Robert Mundell and FIDE President, Mr. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and other is a very strong recognition for our favorite game, which every day becomes more and more popular with steadily growing number of friends.”– said on the occasion the President of the European Chess Union, Mr. Silvio Danailov.

Other guests of the movie premiere were: the US Ambassador to the Republic of Bulgaria Her Excellency Marcie Ries, Justin Szlasa, producer of the movie “Side by Side” with Keanu Reeves, Loren Hammonds from Robert de Niro’s film festival Tribeca, Mubashir Mohi-ud-din, composer “Valley of Saints” and others.

About the program “Chess in School” of the European Chess Union:

On 13th of March, 2012 in Strasbourg the European Parliament has adopted the program of the European Chess Union – ‘Chess in School’. The Written Declaration 50/2011 for the implementation of the ‘Chess in school’ program among the schools in the European Union was signed by 415 MEPs. THIS IS A HISTORICAL SUCCESS FOR THE EUROPEAN CHESS! The program ‘Chess in School’ is designed to promote chess in schools throughout Europe by offering chess curriculums, chess software, chess teachers and communication material to encourage and motivate children to discover and learn the game.
