ECU President Silvio Danailov and FCF President Diego Salazar meet UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova

ECU starts a project “Chess as UNESCO intangible world heritage”

On 12th of May, 2014 in Paris the President of the European Chess Union, Mr. Silvio Danailov, and the President of the French Chess Federation, Mr. Diego Salazar, met with the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Mrs. Irina Bokova.


During the meeting Mrs. Bokova expressed the commitment of UNESCO’s experts to work on the possibility of the ECU project “Chess as a UNESCO intangible world heritage”. The goal of the project will be official recognition of chess as an intangible world heritage. To achieve this recognition, the European Chess Union will establish a special commission in its structure, dedicated to this topic.

Mrs. Irina Bokova gave also the rights to ECU to organize its events under the official Patronage of UNESCO. They agreed that the first event which will be held under the Patronage of UNESCO will be the 15th European Individual Women’s Chess Championship – Plovdiv’ 2014.


As you have been already informed the agreement for cooperation between the two institutions was reached at the working meeting between Mr.Danailov and Mrs. Irina Bokova on 25-th of October, 2012, in Sofia, Bulgaria.
